Dr. Charles Johnson Hansrote, Jr., age 86, died on February 15, 2017. Dr. Hansrote was born on November 22, 1930, in Bowling Green, Md. to Charles Jr. and Hazel Groves Hansrote. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Melva; their son, Charles III and his wife, Jill of St. Charles, Ill.; his grandchildren, C.J, IV, Morgan Jon and wife, Sarah Meredith Reece and husband, Jody Charette and their children, Taryn and Gage. Dr. Hansrote graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a B.S in Chemistry, University of Richmond with a M.S, University of Virginia with a PhD and post graduate study in Chemistry at Duke University. He was a research Chemist for EI DuPont in Waynesboro, Va. and Professor of Chemistry at Lynchburg College. Charles was a member of Maryland East Gate Masonic Lodge 216. He was active in the Lynchburg local district and area BSA for over 30 years. He was awarded the District Order of Merit, Silver Beaver, and Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow. He attended several National Jamborees and courses at the Philmont Scout Reserve. He served on several Wood Badge courses earning recognition as a course director. Charles and Melva participated in Lynchburg Bird Club birding surveys and VSO forays for over twenty-five years. They enjoyed history and nature travel in all fifty states and world-wide. The family wishes to thank Dr. David M. Smith for his care and comfort and Seven Hills Hospice nurses for their loving care. Honoring Charles' wishes, the family had a private family farewell.

Under the leadership of Dr. Hansrote, Blue Ridge Mountain Council developed of the Appomattox Court House National Historic Trail in 1972.
