Troop 48 Scout Master 2006 - 2016

John Edmond “Ed” McDowell, 57, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Haymaker McDowell.

He was born on May 1, 1958 in Roanoke, Virginia and is the son of Charles B. McDowell, Jr. and the late Julia Loomis McDowell.

Ed is also survived by his son: John Edmond McDowell, Jr. and his daughter: Kendall Kathleen McDowell; brother: Charles James McDowell; and nephews; Sean Patrick McDowell and Ryan Daniel McDowell.

Ed served the Virginia State Police for over 35 years, holding the positions of Trooper, Special Agent and First Sergeant assigned to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Over the course of his career his duty posts have been Monterey, Roanoke, Lynchburg and Appomattox.

He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and the many family camping trips they shared.

He grew up in Roanoke, VA, and was a graduate of Patrick Henry High School. He was a Boy Scout and later Scoutmaster of Troop 8, Roanoke, Virginia until being hired by the Virginia State Police, July 1, 1980. For the past ten years he served as an adult leader and Scoutmaster for Troop 48, Timberlake United Methodist Church, in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Ed and his family express their sincere gratitude for the care provided, Dr. Emanuel Cirenza and the staff at the UVA Hope Cancer Center.

A funeral service will be conducted at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, 2505 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA 24018, on Friday, March 18, 2016, at 11 00 a.m. with Rev. Msgr. Joseph P. Lehman officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, March 17, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
