Honoring Melvin H. "Bud" Turner

Whereas, Melvin H. "Bud" Turner was born on September 16, 1935 and was a native of Lynchburg, and

Whereas, Bud Turner joined the Boy Scouts of America as a youth, aspiring to the rank of Life Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, and

Whereas, Bud Turner was a long time and faithful member of Timberlake United Methodist Church, supporting the Church with his prayers, his presence, his gifts, and his service, and

Whereas, While a member of Timberlake United Methodist Church, he became the Cubmaster for Pack 48 and served in this position from 1977 until 1980, and

Whereas, Bud Turner became the Scoutmaster of Troop 48, serving from 1982 until 1990, and

Whereas, While Scoutmaster of Troop 48, 12 scouts attained the rank of Eagle Scout and 25 became Eagle Scouts while he represented Troop 48 from 1980 until the time of his death, and

Whereas, Bud also held the positions of Committee Chairman in 1991 and Scout Coordinator/Charter Representative from 1992-2000 for Troop 48, and

Whereas, Bud Turner faithfully served the Piedmont District and Blue Ridge Mountains Council as a member of the Foxfire (NYLT) staff, as the Facilities Coordinator for Council Camporees, and as an Adult Trainer from 1990 until the time of his death, and

Whereas, While an adult leader in scouting, Bud Turner received his Woodbadge in 1984 and was a member of the prestigious Bobwhite Patrol, and

Whereas, From the time Bud became an adult leader in Boy Scouts, he attended every National Boy Scout Jamboree, and

Whereas, As an adult leader, Melvin H. "Bud" Turner was awarded with the Scouter's Key, the District Award of Merit in 1984, and the highest honor an adult leader can receive the Silver Beaver in 1989.

Now Therefore Be It Resolved, That Boy Scout Troop 48 takes this opportunity to recognize Melvin H. "Bud" Turner for his outstanding character, vision, and leadership, for his love and dedication for the Boy Scouts of America and Troop 48, their many youth and adult leaders, and for the hundreds of lives touched and inspired, and

Be It Further Resolved, That Boy Scout Troop 48 retires its troop flag on Sunday, September 24, 2000, and with the approval of Timberlake United Methodist Church, names its building the Melvin H. "Bud" Turner Scouting Center in honor and recognition of this great man, husband, father, friend, leader, and scout, and his faithful service to scouting.
